Victoria<\/span><\/a> P\ufeffolice has revealed the cars most likely to be stolen as they issue a warning that a new era of tech-savvy thieves no longer need keys to break in.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The number of car thefts in the state has increased over recent years, with \ufeffthe latest Crime Statistics Agency data showing 33,212 were stolen in the year to September.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In some instances, <\/span>police<\/span><\/a> said the cars were stolen without the owner’s keys.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Police estimate more than 10,000 of those <\/span>cars were stolen<\/span><\/a> with key cloning devices, which mimic or clone technology to override the vehicle’s security system.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

They seized 800 of these devices last year. \ufeff<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Our intelligence estimates as many as 30 cars are being stolen using key cloning technology in Victoria every day,” \ufeffVictoria Police Deputy Commissioner Regional Operations Bob Hill said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Key cloning devices are showing up more and more frequently at search warrants and during intercepts of suspicious vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“There is no doubt this methodology is rife in the criminal world and as a community, we need to work together to reduce car theft.”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

These thefts have affected popular makes and models.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Toyota Land Cruisers, Corollas, Hiluxs, and Rav 4s and Holden Commodores and Subaru Imprezas were most likely stolen using technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

From 2022 to 2025, \ufeffSubaru Imprezas saw a 14.4 per cent increase in thefts, Toyota Rav 4s saw a 9.9 per cent increase and Toyota Land Cruisers saw a 9.5 per cent increase.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The suburbs targeted by this type of theft were\ufeff Melbourne, Dandenong, Tarneit, Narre Warren, St Albans, Craigieburn, Southbank, Reservoir, Truganina and Epping.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Police are working with the companies and believe the common theme is their push to start ignitions.\ufeff<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

They are also arresting thieves and recovering stolen cars, 80 per cent \ufeffof which were returned to their owners last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Car owners are advised to \ufefflock their car, park their car off the street and invest in an anti-theft device.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“The best thing you can do is park your car off the street and install anti-theft devices, such as OBD port locks, to reduce your chances of falling victim,” Hill said. \ufeff<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
