The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has unveiled three artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives aimed at modernising global air cargo operations, covering everything from how ground staff search regulatory documents to how rival airlines collaborate on live bookings and disruptions.<\/p>\n
The announcements were made at the IATA World Cargo Symposium (WCS) currently under way in Lima, Peru, the largest annual gathering in the air cargo industry, held under the theme \u201cAdvancing Air Cargo in a Dynamic World.\u201d<\/p>\n
The first initiative is the AI Subject Matter Expert (AI SME), a mobile and web-based application designed to help operational teams quickly locate information within IATA cargo and safety publications by asking questions in everyday language, with the tool returning accurate answers within seconds. It will launch initially covering the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) and the IATA Cargo Handling Manual (ICHM), before being extended progressively to IATA\u2019s wider library of reference publications.<\/p>\n
The second initiative, the Air Cargo AI Excellence Hub, will bring together airlines, ground handlers, freight forwarders, technology providers, and regulators. The Hub is intended to support the orderly integration of AI in air cargo through collaboration on governance, compliance best practices, shared experiences, and the development and deployment of industry standards.<\/p>\n
The third initiative targets interline air cargo, one of the sector\u2019s most persistent friction points. IATA and its strategic partners are exploring how AI agents could enable airlines running different information technology systems to collaborate in real time on bookings, disruptions, and cancellations by achieving system interoperability across users.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe scope for AI to accelerate air cargo\u2019s digital transformation is enormous,\u201d said Brendan Sullivan, IATA\u2019s Global Head of Cargo, adding that the initiatives were designed to ensure industry-wide adoption that is consistent, interoperable, and aligned with global aviation standards.<\/p>\n
The announcements arrive as new IATA data underlines the sector\u2019s growing strategic role. A report released at the symposium found that air cargo transported more than two thirds of all global AI-related goods in 2025, with consignments of such goods growing 20 percent year on year, reflecting the industry\u2019s central role in delivering the servers, memory chips, and data storage equipment that underpin the global AI boom.<\/p>\n
