\"The<\/a>The International Air Transport Association<\/a> (IATA) is advancing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in air cargo with three initiatives to improve operational efficiency, strengthen safety and compliance, and accelerate innovation across the global air cargo value chain.<\/p>\n

VIEWPOINT: There is no dignity in AI or automation<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

IATA said it is launching an AI Subject Matter Expert (AI SME), a mobile and web-based application that helps operational teams quickly find information in IATA cargo and safety publications by asking questions in plain language. The tool provides accurate answers within seconds. This supports faster operational decision-making, strengthens compliance, and improves efficiency in time-critical environments. The AI SME<\/a> will be available initially for the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) and the IATA Cargo Handling Manual (ICHM) and will be rolled out progressively across IATA\u2019s suite of reference publications.<\/p>\n

IATA is also launching the Air Cargo AI Excellence Hubbringing together airlines, ground handlers, freight forwarders, technology providers, and regulators to support the orderly integration of AI in air cargo. The Hub will enable collaboration on best practices in areas such as governance and compliance, the sharing of experiences, and the development and deployment of standards.<\/p>\n

Improving interline air cargo: IATA and its Strategic Partners are exploring the potential for AI to achieve efficiencies in interline air cargo. The parties will work together with the aim of developing a use case to enable airlines using different IT systems to collaborate in real time on bookings, disruptions, and cancellations by using AI agents to achieve system interoperability among users. This initiative is part of the Data & Technology Proof of Concept (PoC) area in the Strategic Partnerships Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe scope for AI to accelerate air cargo\u2019s digital transformation is enormous. Together, these initiatives will help to make the most of AI\u2019s potential with an industry adoption that is consistent, interoperable, and aligned with global aviation standards. Importantly, we will learn from these initiatives to identify additional areas where standards, technological innovation, and collaborative development can enable safer, smarter, and more efficient operations,\u201d said Brendan Sullivan, IATA\u2019s Global Head of Cargo.<\/p>\n

Bridges Air Cargo begins operations with first Embraer E-freighter<\/strong>
The first Embraer E-freighter has successfully entered service in Europe with launch customer Bridges Air Cargo. The jet completed today its first commercial flight departing from Cologne (Germany) and landing in Larnaca (Cyprus) carrying time sensitive Express materials. The aircraft will operate for Bridges Worldwide providing Network Solutions for the Express Industry in Europe, Middle East and Africa.<\/p>\n

Guy Bridges, CEO of the Bridges Group, said: \u201cWe have worked tirelessly over the past 12 months developing a bespoke container and devising handling systems to make this day possible. We are grateful to Embraer & Regional One for their unwavering support and expect the Embraer 190 freighter to play an important role for Bridges to provide network solution at between 8-12 tonnes to the Express Industry. Having obtained our own AOC registered in Malta provides the ideal platform for Bridges to develop and progress E190F operations\u201d.<\/p>\n

In 2025, Embraer expanded its partnership with Regional One, Inc. with the addition of two passenger-to-freight (P2F) conversions, doubling its existing order of two. This continued collaboration highlights Regional One\u2019s strong commitment to enhancing its cargo capabilities through Embraer\u2019s innovative P2F conversion program. E190F was launched to meet the changing demands of e-commerce and modern trade, which require fast deliveries and decentralized operations, driving the demand for faster delivery of shipments to secondary and tertiary markets.\u202fThe jet was developed to fill a gap in the air cargo market and to replace older, less efficient models. E-Jets converted to freighters will have over 40% more volume capacity, three times the range of large cargo turboprops, and up to 30% lower operating costs than larger narrowbodies. If combining capacity under the floor and main deck, the maximum structural payload is 13,500 kg.<\/p>\n
