SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) has announced the commercial licensing of its cell encapsulant technology to Anabond Ltd, a manufacturer of industrial adhesives and coatings via a technology transfer. Cell encapsulants are special protective layers that shield solar cells from environmental degradation and improve their durability and efficiency.<\/p>\n

Under the technology transfer agreement, the private university in Kattankulathur near Chennai, will receive an upfront payment of \u20b91 crore and also receive future royalties on the innovation for a period of seven years. <\/p>\n

Speaking to businessline<\/i>, K Anathanarayanan, Department of Chemistry, SRMIST, who led the development, said that the institute\u2019s encapsulant solutions, developed over 4-5 years, can increase the life of solar cells by as much as 50 per cent. Unlike incumbent technologies that are suitable for the current generation of modules, SRMIST\u2019s solution can be applied to more advanced, next-gen modules including TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact), he added.<\/p>\n

Prior to this collaboration, SRMIST had signed 17 agreements with industry partners. However, this is the first arrangement that goes beyond a one-time purchase, allowing for incremental improvements to the existing solution, while also earning the institute royalty payments, P Sathyanarayanan, Pro-Chancellor (Academics) added.<\/p>\n

The agreement was facilitated in collaboration with the SRMIST Technology Transfer Office(TTO), and the institute\u2019s Directorate of Entrepreneurship and Innovations. <\/p>\n
