Later, when Donald Trump said the war in Iran was \u201cvery complete, pretty much\u201d and that there was \u201cnothing left in a military sense\u201d in the country, oil prices fell back down below US$90.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Still, even if the price of oil keeps falling, the cost of reshaping trade routes could prove a more lasting threat to the global economy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><b>The cost of carrying goods<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Carriers have been forced to divert around Africa, adding 10 to 14 days to trips between Asia and Europe and <a href=\"https:\/\/industryidx.com\/red-sea-crisis-shipping-impact\/#:~:text=Fuel%20Consumption:%20The%20longer%20route,board%20due%20to%20global%20volatility.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/industryidx.com\/red-sea-crisis-shipping-impact\/#:~:text=Fuel%20Consumption:%20The%20longer%20route,board%20due%20to%20global%20volatility.\">roughly 30 per cent more<\/a> fuel consumption. It will likely take more evidence that the war is abating before insurers decide it\u2019s no longer prohibitively expensive for ships to sail key routes in the Persian Gulf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">These added costs and delays are passed along to shippers and consumers, and could ultimately become a more significant driver of price increases for imported goods than rising oil prices alone. Investors price in geopolitical risk, but the market has shifted its focus to operational disruptions such as refinery shutdown and export constraints.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">As these logistical pressures and the rising price of oil (those massive tankers need fuel, too) weigh on carriers, businesses and consumers across Canada are already seeing<b> <\/b>costs being passed along.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><b>Travel advisory<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Canadians may soon pay as much as 20 per cent more to fly ahead of the peak travel months as the war <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/personal-finance\/article-flight-costs-airfare-iran-war-jet-fuel-prices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/personal-finance\/article-flight-costs-airfare-iran-war-jet-fuel-prices\/\">pushes up jet-fuel costs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Major carriers such as<b> <\/b>United Airlines and WestJet have<b> <\/b>already acknowledged that fares may rise sooner rather than later. With the situation in Iran already making operating flights more expensive, \u201cit\u2019s likely further pricing adjustments may be needed,\u201d a WestJet spokesperson told The Globe. Porter and Air Canada said it was too early to say whether their<b> <\/b>pricing would be affected, but they operate in the same world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Gulf region exports more than one million barrels of aviation jet fuel a day, making up about 17 per cent of total global consumption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><b>More food fright<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">If energy costs remain high over the coming weeks, Canadians will feel the pinch first at the grocery store \u2013 where the shorter shelf life for fresh food means a greater vulnerability to global shipping disruptions. \u201cCertainly, everybody can see the increases in gasoline prices, but I think it\u2019ll ripple through the food supply chains in North America as well,\u201d Fraser Johnson, professor of operations management at Western University\u2019s Ivey Business School, <a href=\"https:\/\/barrie360.com\/mideast-conflict-effect-cda-supply-chains\/#:~:text=Staples%20like%20beef%20and%20coffee,for%20children's%20toymaker%20Spin%20Master.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/barrie360.com\/mideast-conflict-effect-cda-supply-chains\/#:~:text=Staples%20like%20beef%20and%20coffee,for%20children's%20toymaker%20Spin%20Master.\">told The Canadian Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><b>Toy trouble, too<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In a recent earnings call, Spin Master executives said they haven\u2019t seen a<b> <\/b>\u201cmaterial impact\u201d on the toy maker\u2019s supply chain. \u201cOf course, if this continues for an extended period of time, we will start seeing that,\u201d company chief financial officer<b> <\/b>Jonathan Roiter said. \u201cAnd there\u2019s probably a three- or four-month lag in terms of our freight costs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><b>Stepping back<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The one time in history the price of oil crossed US$140 a barrel \u2013 from a mark of US$52 in early 2007 to July in 2008 \u2013 inflation rose from 2 per cent to nearly 6 per cent. But a year later, economist David Rosenberg wrote in a client note yesterday, oil was back down to US$60, and inflation back to its starting point. \u201cTell me if you remember still talking about an oil crisis and inflation in the summer of 2009,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">I do, because that is when I first joined the Report on Business. But it\u2019s fair to say I don\u2019t bring the Great Recession up at dinner as much these days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><i>With a report from The Canadian Press<\/i><\/p>\n<hr class=\"article-divider\">\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><b>How small businesses are paying the bills<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Credit stress is rising among some Canadian small businesses as borrowing costs remain high and global uncertainty weighs on supply chains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Financial trade delinquencies \u2013 missed payments on bank loans, credit cards and lines of credit \u2013 rose 9.02 per cent year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 3.52 per cent, according to data from Equifax Canada set to be published today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">At the same time, industrial trade delinquencies \u2013 which track payments to suppliers and trade partners \u2013 fell 25.52 per cent to 4.65 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWe\u2019re seeing stabilization in day-to-day supplier payments, but leverage built up over the past two years is weighing on service and rate-sensitive sectors,\u201d Jeff Brown, head of commercial solutions at Equifax Canada, said ahead of the report\u2019s publication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The divergence suggests supplier payments have remained more stable than bank-related borrowing.
