The global technology sector has witnessed significant job cuts in the first few months of 2026, with over 35,000 employees laid off across nearly 50 companies as firms restructure operations and intensify investments in artificial intelligence (AI), Financial Express<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n

The layoffs reflect a broader shift in priorities among technology companies, many of which are increasing spending on AI development, automation and data infrastructure while implementing cost-cutting measures, the report cited data from layoff tracking platform Layoffs.fyi.<\/p>\n

Several major technology firms have already announced workforce reductions this year.<\/p>\n

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, laid off about 10 per cent of employees in its Reality Labs division in January. The unit, which focuses on the metaverse and immersive technologies, had about 15,000 employees prior to the job cuts. The company is increasingly shifting its focus towards building next-generation AI capabilities.<\/p>\n

Cloud computing company Oracle is also preparing to cut thousands of jobs across multiple divisions as it manages costs linked to heavy investments in AI data centres, according to reports.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Amazon laid off about 16,000 corporate employees in January as part of efforts to streamline operations amid intensifying competition in the AI space. The layoffs marked the company\u2019s second major workforce reduction since October 2025.<\/p>\n

Industry analysts said that these moves highlight a structural shift in the technology sector, where companies are redirecting resources towards AI tools, advanced computing infrastructure and automation systems.<\/p>\n

While the technology industry continues to invest heavily in innovation, the restructuring indicates that workforce requirements are evolving as companies adapt to the growing role of artificial intelligence in business operations.<\/p>\n

The trend also suggests that professionals in the sector may increasingly need to develop AI-related and advanced digital skills as the industry enters a new phase shaped by automation and intelligent systems.
