As the world’s largest importer of both oil and liquefied natural gas, China is particularly vulnerable to the effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz imposed by Iran. This maneuver aims to take global hydrocarbon supplies and the Gulf region’s economies hostage in response to the offensive led by the United States and Israel. China, the world’s second-largest economy, relies on this strategic chokepoint for 45% of its oil.<\/p>\n

The Iranian strategy is reckless, even though the country had significantly increased its oil shipments to accumulate revenue in the weeks preceding the war, as Washington reinforced its military presence in the region. But the threat now looming over this strategic corridor likely cut Iran off from China, its main customer, which absorbed over 80% of Iranian crude through a network of small refineries less vulnerable to US sanctions than major national companies.<\/p>\n

China announced it would send its special envoy for the Middle East, Zhai Jun, to the region, without specifying which countries he would visit. While Beijing avoids any military alliances, it cultivates diplomatic ties with both Tehran and the Gulf monarchies. The Chinese government expressed frustration at being drawn into a crisis that exposed its dependence on global trade and repeatedly emphasized the importance of keeping navigation open. Although Tehran explicitly threatened Western and Israeli cargo ships without directly targeting Chinese vessels, the risk has nonetheless paralyzed much of maritime trade.<\/p>\n
