PARIS \u2014 <\/strong>The latest bout of fighting between the United States, Israel and Iran has seen artificial intelligence deployed as never before to sift intelligence and select targets, although the technology\u2019s use in war remains hotly debated.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Different forms of AI have reportedly been used to guide the Israeli campaign in the Gaza Strip and the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in an American raid.<\/p>\n

And experts believe the technology has helped select targets for the thousands of US and Israeli strikes on Iran since Feb. 28, although exact uses have yet to be confirmed.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Today \u201cevery military power of any significance invests hugely in military applications of AI,\u201d said Laure de Roucy-Rochegonde of French think tank IFRI.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost any military function can be boosted with AI,\u201d from \u201clogistics to reconnaissance, observation, information warfare, electronic warfare and cybersecurity,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

AI tools can also be found built into semi-autonomous attack drones and other weapons.<\/p>\n

But one of their best-known uses is in shortening the so-called kill chain \u2014 the time and decision-making between detecting a target and striking it.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

US forces use the Maven Smart System (MSS) built by Palantir, which the company says can identify and prioritize potential targets.<\/p>\n

The Washington Post reported last week that Anthropic\u2019s Claude generative AI model has been integrated with Maven to boost the tool\u2019s detection and simulation capabilities.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Palantir and Anthropic did not respond to Agence France-Presse\u2019s (AFP) requests for comment.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

AI algorithms \u201callow us to move much faster in handling information, and above all to be more comprehensive,\u201d said Bertrand Rondepierre, head of the French army\u2019s AI agency Amiad.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The technology can sift through vast quantities of data, including \u201csatellite images, radar, electromagnetic waves, sound, drone images and sometimes real-time video,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Human control<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

AI\u2019s deployment in war poses a slew of moral and legal questions, notably on the extent of human control over their actions.<\/p>\n

The debate was brought to the fore during the fighting in Gaza, where Israeli forces used a program dubbed \u201cLavender\u201d to identify targets \u2014 within a certain margin of error.<\/p>\n

That application worked \u201cbecause it covered a very limited area,\u201d de Roucy-Rochegonde said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Israel also has a \u201cmass surveillance system\u201d that could feed data about the enclave\u2019s inhabitants into Lavender.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt seems less likely that such a system has been set up in Iran,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf something does go wrong, then who\u2019s responsible?\u201d Peter Asaro, chairman of the International Committee for Robot Arms Control, said in an interview with AFP.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The widely reported bombing of an Iranian school \u2014 which authorities there say killed 150 people \u2014 could be a case of mistaken AI targeting, he added.<\/p>\n

Neither the US nor Israel has acknowledged responsibility for the strike.<\/p>\n

AFP was unable to reach the scene of the school to verify what happened there.<\/p>\n

But the site was close to two facilities controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Tehran\u2019s powerful ideological elite.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t distinguish it from the military base as they should have, (but) who is they?\u201d he asked \u2014 human or machine?<\/p>\n

If AI was used, he argued that the key question is \u201chow old was the data\u201d used for the targeting, and whether the misdirected strike stemmed from \u201ca database error.\u201d<\/p>\n

Step by step<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rondepierre said that AIs \u201coperating without anyone being in control\u201d are \u201cscience fiction.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In France, at least, \u201cmilitary commanders are at the heart of the action and the design of these systems,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo military decision-maker would agree to use an AI if he didn\u2019t have trust in and control over what it\u2019s doing,\u201d Rondepierre added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey know what the risks involved are, what the capabilities of these systems are and what contexts they can use them in, with what level of trust,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Today was just the \u201cbeginning\u201d on use of AI by the world\u2019s armed forces, said Benjamin Jensen of Washington-based think tank CSIS, who has taken part in tests of AI in military decision-making over the past decade.<\/p>\n

The world\u2019s armies \u201chaven\u2019t fundamentally rethought how we plan, how we conduct operations, to take advantage\u201d of AI\u2019s capabilities, he added. \u201cIt\u2019s going to take a generation for us to really figure this out.\u201d AFP<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
