Last season, Bowling Green hosted the Huskies at the Slater Family Ice Arena, where the Falcons claimed a 2-1 overtime victory and a 4-0 victory to sweep Michigan Tech and win their first playoff series in five seasons.

This season, Bowling Green enters MTU’s John MacInnes Student Ice Arena as the fifth seed as they take on the fourth seed Huskies in the same venue where the Falcons secured a weekend sweep last weekend to close out the regular season.

BGSU and MTU share many similarities and are closely ranked in multiple categories, including goals per game, goals against per game, shots on goal per game, power play percentage, and penalty kill percentage.

Michigan Tech averages 3.22 goals per game (second in the CCHA) and 2.61 goals against per game (fourth best in the CCHA) while the Falcons average 3.00 goals scored (third in the CCHA) and 2.35 goals against per game (third in the CCHA). For shots on goal, BG averages 31.50 per game (second in the CCHA) while the Huskies average 29.03 (fourth in the CCHA). As for special units, Bowling Green currently sports a .215 powerplay percentage (second in CCHA) and a .826 penalty kill percentage (third in CCHA) while the Huskies claim a .210 power play percentage (fourth in CCHA) to go along with a .820 penalty kill percentage (fourth in CCHA).

Another similarity between the two teams is the makeup of their leading scorers. Among each team’s top five highest-ranked players for point production, both teams contain one senior forward, two junior forwards, a freshman forward, and a defenseman.

For the Huskies, their leading scorer is senior forward Stiven Sardarian, who leads the CCHA in assists (31) and points (42), respectively, and stands alone as 11th in the NCAA for the two categories.

Following behind Sardarian are junior forwards Max Koskipirtti and team captain Isaac Gordon, respectively. Koskipirtti, an alternate captain, has scored 13 goals and 21 assists so far on the campaign, which places him fourth in the CCHA for points production and ties him for fifth in the CCHA for assists, while Gordon has contributed six goals and 20 assists of his own.

The Falcons’ top scorer this season is senior forward and alternate captain Quinn Emerson, who has scored 10 goals and 21 assists to tie him for fifth in the CCHA for assists while being seventh in the conference for points.

Behind Emerson are junior forwards Ben Doran and Tyler Hotson, who have scored 29 and 28 points, respectively. Doran sits fourth in the CCHA for assists while also ranking sixth in the conference in both faceoff winning percentage (.543) and number of faceoffs won (589). Hotson leads the Falcon roster in goals (12) and power-play goals (5) while ranking second on the Falcon roster for +/- rating (+13).

Both teams also have a freshman who has burst onto the college hockey scene and impressed during their first season of collegiate hockey, among their top five scorers.

For the Huskies, their freshman phenom is Teydon Trembecky, who has scored 14 goals and 11 assists so far this season. Trembecky is the Huskies’ leading goal scorer while also leading the team in shots on goal with 82 and power-play goals with four.

For the Falcons, forward Dominik Rymon has impressed during his freshman campaign by scoring 10 goals and 10 assists to lead the Falcons’ batch of 11 freshman players in goals and points on the campaign. Rymon is tied with Emerson for second place on the team in goals scored.

Both teams also have a defenseman among their top five scorers, with senior Jack Anderson and junior Breck McKinley both putting together strong campaigns for their respective teams.

Jack Anderson, another alternate captain for the Huskies, has scored 11 goals and 13 assists and leads the CCHA in goals scored by a defenseman. Anderson also leads Tech in +/- rating (+16) and blocked shots (58).

While Anderson leads the conference in goals scored by a defenseman, Bowling Green’s McKinley leads the conference in assists and points by a defenseman as the St. Albert, Alberta native has contributed two goals and 24 assists for 26 points over the course of the season. McKinley leads the Falcon roster in assists and +/- rating with a +15.

From a goaltending standpoint, junior netminder Owen Bartoszkiewicz has appeared in all but one game for MTU and has claimed two shutouts on the campaign. Over the course of the season, Bartoszkiewicz has made 899 saves while recording a 2.36 goals against average and a .917 save percentage.

The Falcons have had junior Cole Moore, sophomore Tyler Palmer, and freshman Jacob Steinman all make appearances between the pipes throughout the season and over the course of the last three weekends of the regular season.

Moore and Palmer were forced to step up during the final two weekends of the regular season when the team’s best statistical netminder Steinman, who has recorded 352 saves and a 2.14 goals against average to go along with a .921 save percentage, suffered an injury during a game against Augustana (20-10-4, 14-8-3) on Feb. 14. Moore has made 301 saves this season while recording a 2.40 goals against average and a .912 save percentage and picked up a shutout against Augustana on Feb. 13. Palmer picked up a shutout victory of his own (the first of his NCAA career) against Michigan Tech last weekend and has recorded a 2.15 goals against average and a .910 save percentage while making 182 saves during the season.

This weekend, head coach Dennis Williams and the Falcons will look to eliminate the No. 20 Michigan Tech Huskies in the first round for the second season in a row as they begin play in the CCHA Mason Cup playoffs at MTU’s John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Falcon Media Sports Network’s Ben Corak will have the call from all the games in the best-of-three series live from Houghton, Michigan, on WBGU 88.1 FM.

Falcon Four Players to Watch

Senior Forward – Stiven Sardarian, Michigan Tech

The Huskies’ leader in points and assists, Sardarian, has proven time and time again to be a dangerous offensive threat.
