global supply chains, <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/topics\/technology\/dhl-supply-chain-happyrobot-agentic-artificial-intelligence-warehouse-management-1234787889\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DHL<\/a> CEO Tobias Meyer feels the international logistics giant has levers to pull to keep freight operations in the region running.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> The hostilities have made ocean carriers wary of sailing through the <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/topics\/logistics\/strait-of-hormuz-container-ships-persian-gulf-msc-maersk-hapag-lloyd-cma-cgm-surcharges-marinetraffic-freight-rates-1234816241\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, and forced a <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/topics\/logistics\/air-freight-cargo-middle-east-us-iran-war-strikes-flights-suspended-fedex-qatar-emirates-etihad-amazon-shein-temu-1234815607\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mass closure of airspace<\/a> throughout the Middle East that directly impacted 13 percent of global <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/tag\/air-cargo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_air-cargo\" data-tag=\"air-cargo\">air cargo<\/a> capacity, according to data from Rotate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> While some of <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/tag\/dhl\/\" id=\"auto-tag_dhl\" data-tag=\"dhl\">DHL<\/a>\u2019s planes are in airports that are closed, \u201cwe have flexibility,\u201d said Meyer in a Thursday earnings call. \u201cWe have a broad footprint in the region, and what happens in each location can change hour by hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> If air constraints in some countries like Bahrain, Kuwait and the U.A.E. linger, the company will rely on countries where airports are still operating, like Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> \u201cWe have a very well-established road network in the Middle East, which enables us to bring cargo to those airports that are open,\u201d Meyer said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> After the earnings call, he confirmed to reporters that DHL is still accepting delivery orders in the Middle East throughout the conflict\u2014albeit with delays\u2014and that deliveries to Israel are currently being moved via Cyprus. <\/p>\n<div class=\"injected-related-story \/\/ u-margin-tb-1\">\n<h3 id=\"title-of-a-story\" class=\"c-title u-font-size-22 lrv-u-line-height-copy a-font-accent lrv-u-margin-b-050 When it comes to ocean freight entering the region, Meyer warned of \u201csignificant\u201d delays as more carriers <a lrv-a-font-body-m \"> \u201cThat\u2019s what we\u2019re starting to see now, but I think it\u2019s really too early to tell whether that is a phenomenon that takes a broader hold,\u201d Meyer said. \u201cPeople have taken more of a wait-and-see approach. This can last for another couple of days, not a couple more weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> According to Meyer, DHL has learned from past disruptions to capitalize on opportunities where customers would prefer to move freight via an alternate route or transportation mode.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> \u201cAs tragic as these conflicts are and as regrettable, given what we do and the segments we are in, we typically benefit from this turmoil more than we have exposure to the downside,\u201d Meyer said. Citing volume growth in Morocco in early February after flash floods caused mass evacuations, the CEO noted \u201cpeople tend to rely on providers like us, and with our significant footprint in the region, we are often the go-to party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> DHL has committed significant capital to the Middle East, <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/topics\/logistics\/dhl-middle-east-investment-570-million-saudi-arabia-uae-trade-evri-merger-uk-parcel-delivery-1234750889\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investing $575 million<\/a> in Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E. through 2030.
