On March 5th<\/sup> at 7:00 PM in Shenzhen, or 6:00 AM on the East Coast here in the US, BYD will be launching the next-generation Blade Battery and Flash Charging, in addition to multiple models using the technology. People who have seen a preview<\/a> are expecting this to be a step change in the EV landscape.<\/p>\n We have already seen the turquoise T-shaped next-generation Flash Chargers<\/a> (BYD terminology for megawatt+ chargers), sometimes under a solar canopy<\/a>.<\/p>\n [embedded content]<\/p>\n From a shot<\/a> of the launch event being set up, we can see ten cars being featured. From Yangwang: U7, U8, and U8L. From Fang Cheng Bao: Ti3 and Ti7. From Denza: Z9 and Z9GT<\/a>. From BYD: Seal 07, Sealion 06, and Song Ultra. Several of these are large, premium vehicles, offering 1000+ hp and 1000+ km<\/a> of range. However, the Ti3 and the new EV version of the Ti7<\/a> are at more affordable price points. Meanwhile, the Sealion 06, Song Ultra, and Seal 07 are volume drivers.<\/p>\n Some of the models featured at the event have the same new 240 kW motor that is spreading across multiple<\/a> BYD models in regulatory filings<\/a>. With several models seeing reduced weight combined with more power and longer range, it is anticipated that they will also get the next-generation battery and flash-charging platform.<\/p>\n [embedded content]<\/p>\n In addition, a new Tang model and Seal 08 are set to be revealed at the launch. We may also see the production Denza Z<\/a>, which has been getting teased<\/a> a lot lately.<\/p>\n Many also anticipate that we will see the production variable flux motor<\/a>, which has previously been seen in patent drawings. Updated intelligent driving is also anticipated. There may be other surprises.<\/p>\n This is being positioned as a disruptive leap forward to the next generation. The event will help clarify why BYD sales were down in China recently, while they cleared out old inventory, updated production, and prepared for the launch. Overall, the new generation will mean that EVs will become more powerful, faster, and more efficient. Range will be longer than many ICE cars and charge times will be no longer than refueling. All while being less expensive than legacy ICE.<\/p>\n We will know more tomorrow, but the potential implications are significant. Other automakers will need to step up to compete and\/or collaborate in China. While some closed markets will fall another generation behind, technological progress keeps charging ahead. That progress will eventually disrupt ICE markets and accelerate the transition globally.
