New Delhi: Shipping costs<\/a> have started to rise after carriers imposed a Emergency Conflict Surcharge<\/a> on cargo transiting the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> and the wider Middle East, citing escalating security risks.<\/p>\n

One of the largest shipping companies told customers it will add between $2,000 and $4,000 depending on the number of containers starting Monday, according to a communication sent to one of its clients, seen by ET. The shipping company assured customers that it has taken “precautionary measures” to “safeguard operations in the affected areas”.

More operators are expected to follow and levy charges under various heads as escalating geopolitical tensions<\/a> threaten one of the world’s busiest trade routes.<\/p>\n

“This one notice has increased cost by 30%,” said Supal Sharma, director at Epic Abundance International, a fertiliser trading firm with exposure to West Asian routes. He added that traders are bracing for additional levies such as war-risk surcharges<\/a>, higher marine insurance premiums and container imbalance charges.<\/p>\n

Industry executives said insurers have begun reassessing risk exposure for vessels calling at ports in the Gulf, pushing up war-risk premiums. Any escalation in the conflict could also result in vessel rerouting, longer transit times and equipment shortages, further tightening freight markets<\/a>.<\/p>\n


For India, which depends heavily on West Asia for crude oil, fertilisers and petrochemical feedstock, higher freight and insurance costs could feed into imported inflation<\/a> if the tensions persist. Traders said even short-term disruptions tend to ripple across contracts, especially for bulk commodities<\/a> and time-sensitive cargo in the current scenario.<\/p>\n
