rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a> following a joint U.S. and Israeli military operation in Iran and the latter\u2019s retaliatory attacks on neighboring Middle Eastern countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/tag\/container-shipping\/\" id=\"auto-tag_container-shipping\" data-tag=\"container-shipping\">Container shipping<\/a> firms, oil tankers and bulk carriers now must navigate a murky environment in which seafarer safety takes primary concern and insurance companies end <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/topics\/logistics\/zim-red-sea-return-suez-canal-israel-hamas-ceasefire-war-risk-insurance-premiums-port-congestion-1234791433\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">war-risk coverage<\/a>, resulting in higher surcharges for shippers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> According to data from maritime visibility platform Windward, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz dropped 81 percent below its seven-day average on Sunday. <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/tag\/maersk\/\" id=\"auto-tag_maersk\" data-tag=\"maersk\">Maersk<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/tag\/hapag-lloyd\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hapag-lloyd\" data-tag=\"hapag-lloyd\">Hapag-Lloyd<\/a> were among those that suspended shipping through the chokepoint, which is known for being a major trade artery for oil and natural gas, likely causing delays for services calling ports in the Persian Gulf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> As of Monday, there were still 132 active container ships with a combined capacity 458,000 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the Persian Gulf, accounting for 1.4 percent of the global fleet, according to data from container shipping market intelligence firm Linerlytica. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> Linerlytica says 10 percent of the global container shipping fleet has routes that pass through the strait. Maersk\u2019s shared ME11\/IMX (Middle East-India to Mediterranean Sea) service with Hapag-Lloyd is also reverting to the Africa route. That service line\u2019s Maersk Hanoi vessel is currently in the Red Sea and expects to pass the Suez Canal on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> Both companies say they would prioritize the trans-Suez route once the situation stabilizes and the security situation improves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> On Saturday, CMA CGM said all vessels inside and headed for the Persian Gulf had been instructed to proceed to shelter immediately. The French carrier had <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/topics\/logistics\/cma-cgm-red-sea-suez-canal-cape-of-good-hope-rerouting-three-service-loops-lunar-new-year-xeneta-houthis-1234804609\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">already rerouted three<\/a> of its services traversing the Suez Canal back around the Cape of Good Hope due to the uncertainty in the region. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> Three CMA CGM vessels, the Pegasus, the Vila Do Conde and the Antigone, are currently in the Red Sea. All three are either entering or leaving Saudi Arabia\u2019s Port of Jeddah. Three other ships were routed away from the Red Sea\u2019s chokepoint, the Bab-el Mandeb Strait.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/tag\/mediterranean-shipping-company-msc\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mediterranean-shipping-company-msc\" data-tag=\"mediterranean-shipping-company-msc\">Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC)<\/a> has suspended all bookings for worldwide cargo destined for the Middle East until further notice.
