Global air cargo demand grew 5.6 percent in January 2026 compared with January 2025, with African carriers recording the strongest regional expansion at 18.2 percent, according to data released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on Monday.<\/p>\n

Total demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTK), rose 5.6 percent overall and 7.2 percent for international operations, while total capacity, measured in available cargo tonne-kilometers (ACTK), expanded 3.6 percent globally and 5.7 percent internationally, indicating that demand continued to outpace supply in the sector.<\/p>\n

Regional Performance<\/strong><\/p>\n

Africa\u2019s 18.2 percent year-on-year cargo growth was the most pronounced of any region, against a capacity increase of 6.5 percent, suggesting African carriers captured growing cargo flows at strong utilisation rates. Middle Eastern carriers followed with 9.3 percent demand growth, with the region also recording the strongest capacity expansion globally at 9.9 percent. European airlines posted 6.9 percent cargo demand growth, Asia-Pacific carriers grew 7.8 percent, and Latin American and Caribbean carriers recorded a 2.0 percent contraction, the weakest showing globally. North American carriers were the only region to post both a demand decline of 0.5 percent and a small capacity reduction of 0.2 percent, reflecting pressure from evolving United States trade policies.<\/p>\n

Three macroeconomic indicators provided a supportive backdrop for the month. Global goods trade grew 4.9 percent year-on-year in December 2025. Jet fuel prices fell 6.5 percent year-on-year in January. And the global Purchasing Managers\u2019 Index (PMI) rose to 51.8, its highest level in over 18 months, crossing the 50-point expansion threshold and signalling strengthening industrial activity.<\/p>\n

IATA Director General Willie Walsh described the start to 2026 as robust, but flagged that Middle East hostilities and ongoing uncertainty around United States trade policy would continue to test the resilience of air cargo supply chains in the coming months. He said both issues were expected to feature prominently at the World Cargo Symposium scheduled for Lima, Peru from March 10 to 12, 2026.<\/p>\n
