LONG BEACH, Calif., March 2 (Reuters) – Container ships account for roughly 100 of the 750 ships \u200censnared in the Strait of Hormuz backups following U.S. \u200cand Israeli attacks on Iran, Jeremy Nixon, CEO of container carrier Ocean \u200bNetwork Express (ONE), said on Monday.<\/p>\n

“About 10% of the container ship global fleet is caught up in this,” Nixon said at S&P Global Market Intelligence\u2019s TPM26 container shipping conference in Long Beach.<\/p>\n

Maritime insurers \u200cceased covering voyages through \u2060the strait between Iran and Oman, which carries around one-fifth of oil consumed globally as well \u2060as large quantities of gas, as Iran retaliated against U.S. and Israeli strikes. The commander of the country’s Revolutionary Guards told Iranian \u200bstate \u200btelevision Monday that any ship \u200bthat attempted to transit the \u200cstrait would be set aflame.<\/p>\n

“All of that cargo is going to start backing up” in shipping hubs and key ports in Europe and Asia, Nixon said.<\/p>\n

ONE and rival container carriers such as industry leader MSC have stopped booking cargo to \u200cthe Middle East, said Nixon, who \u200bon July 1 is stepping down \u200bas CEO of \u200bONE.<\/p>\n

The company is a privately held joint venture \u200cestablished by Japanese shipping lines \u200bNippon Yusen Kaisha, \u200bMitsui O.S.K. Lines and K Line.<\/p>\n

Industry experts also warned that an extended closure of the Strait of Hormuz \u200bwould cause oil \u200cprices to soar.<\/p>\n

“That would create a big energy spike,” \u200bNixon said.<\/p>\n
