The Department of Commerce<\/a> on Monday held a stakeholder consultation with logistics operators, shipping lines, financial institutions and multiple government departments to assess the evolving geopolitical situation and its potential impact on India\u2019s export-import (EXIM) cargo flows.<\/p>\n

The meeting, chaired by Special Secretaries Suchindra Misra<\/a> and Lav Agarwal, reviewed operational challenges in cargo movement, shipping routes, and supply chain reliability.<\/p>\n

Representatives from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, Reserve Bank of India, and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways were among those present, along with industry stakeholders from the export promotion ecosystem and logistics sector.<\/p>\n

Participants assessed the evolving operational environment, including potential vessel rerouting, changes in transit times, adjustments to vessel schedules, and the availability of containers and other equipment, the government said in an official statement.<\/p>\n

Discussions also examined trends in freight and insurance costs, as well as implications for time-sensitive exports, the statement added.<\/p>\n

Maintaining cargo predictability<\/h3>\n

Officials emphasised the need to maintain predictability in cargo movement while minimising delays in logistics operations. Ensuring seamless documentation processes and efficient payment mechanisms for exporters and importers was also highlighted as a key priority.The government reiterated that maintaining the continuity of EXIM logistics remains a priority and that a coordinated approach is needed to strengthen supply chain resilience.<\/p>\n

Particular attention was given to safeguarding exporters’ interests, especially small and medium enterprises, while ensuring that essential imports required for domestic production and consumption remain unaffected, the statement noted.<\/p>\n

The stakeholders agreed to maintain close, real-time coordination to monitor developments in shipping routes, equipment availability, and surcharges.<\/p>\n

Faster customs clearances<\/h3>\n

The meeting also discussed facilitation measures for time-sensitive export segments such as perishables, pharmaceuticals and high-value manufactured goods.In addition, the government highlighted the importance of strengthening port and inland container depot facilitation to prevent congestion and reduce cargo dwell times.<\/p>\n

Officials indicated that authorities remain ready to provide support to exporters by offering procedural flexibility in export-related authorisations in the event of genuine disruptions.<\/p>\n

Coordination with customs authorities to ensure faster clearances, as well as engagement with financial and insurance institutions to protect exporter interests, will also be prioritised.<\/p>\n

The department said it will continue to work closely with relevant ministries and industry stakeholders to address emerging challenges and ensure smooth trade flows.<\/p>\n
