At least 11 people have been killed after a Bolivian air force cargo plane crashed in the western city of El Alto, according to media reports.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred at about 18:20 local time on Friday as the aircraft was approaching El Alto International Airport after departing from Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia\u2019s air traffic control authority said.<\/p>\n

Officials reported that the plane skidded off the runway during landing and struck several vehicles on a nearby motorway. The crash forced authorities to temporarily close the airport while emergency crews responded.<\/p>\n

Bolivia\u2019s defence ministry later confirmed that the aircraft involved was a Bolivian Air Force C-130 Hercules transport plane. The ministry said the flight had been carrying banknotes destined for the Central Bank of Bolivia, but it did not immediately provide official casualty figures.<\/p>\n

Authorities launched an investigation into the cause of the crash as rescue teams worked at the scene and cleared debris from the roadway. Images circulating on social media showed the aircraft resting on the ground alongside heavily damaged vehicles.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the defence ministry warned that the transported banknotes had no purchasing power and said that collecting or attempting to use them would be considered a crime.<\/p>\n

Officials also urged members of the public to stay away from the crash site to allow emergency responders to operate safely. Media reports indicated that some people had approached the area in an attempt to retrieve the scattered banknotes.<\/p>\n

A relative of one injured motorist told the Reuters news agency that a falling aircraft tire struck a car, leaving the passenger with head injuries before she was taken to hospital.<\/p>\n
