ROLLA, Mo.<\/strong> : The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded $28.5 million to Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) to accelerate the domestic production of critical minerals. The federal grant, issued through the Economic Development Administration (EDA), targets the construction of a specialized facility designed to bridge the gap between laboratory research and industrial-scale mining operations.<\/p>\n

The funding supports the Critical Minerals and Materials for Advanced Energy (CM2AE) Tech Hub, a regional consortium led by Missouri S&T. It represents one of the most significant federal investments in domestic mineral processing infrastructure in recent years.<\/p>\n

Here is the reality nobody wants to admit: The United States cannot meet its 2030 climate goals without a radical shift in how it processes raw materials. This isn\u2019t just about digging holes in the ground. It is about the chemistry and engineering required to turn rock into high-purity battery components. Missouri S&T is now positioned at the center of that transition.<\/p>\n

The 18,000-Square-Foot Solution<\/h3>\n

The centerpiece of the investment is an 18,000-square-foot test-bed facility. Construction is expected to take approximately two years. Once completed, it will serve as a pilot plant where researchers and industry partners can test mineral extraction and recycling technologies at a pre-commercial scale.<\/p>\n

In the current mining lifecycle, many promising technologies die in the “valley of death”: the gap between a successful university experiment and a multi-billion-dollar commercial plant. Missouri S&T\u2019s new facility aims to kill that bottleneck.<\/p>\n
