INDIA – DP World has renewed and expanded its partnership with Delhi Capitals cricket franchise, reinforcing its role as the team’s Global Logistics Partner while advancing grassroots cricket development through repurposed shipping containers.
This global logistics firm has delivered 13 repurposed shipping containers across eight countries, demonstrating how retired assets can be repurposed into functional infrastructure for underserved communities.
For fresh produce logistics professionals, could this initiative offer a compelling model for converting idle shipping assets into operational cold-chain infrastructure?
Repurposed Containers: From Cargo to Community Asset
Since launching the Beyond Boundaries Initiative in 2023, DP World has delivered 13 repurposed shipping containers and 3,300 cricket kits across eight countries.
In India, communities in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Lucknow, and Chennai have benefited, with Delhi NCR receiving two containers transformed into fully equipped, multi-purpose pavilions alongside more than 500 cricket kits.
“This partnership reflects DP World’s commitment to enabling performance, both on and off the field,” said Hemant Kumar Ruia, Country Manager for DP World Subcontinent (India). “We are proud to deliver seamless logistics that allow the team to perform at its best, while expanding access to the game in communities across India.”
Lessons for Food Logistics Infrastructure
For food businesses operating across Africa and the Middle East, repurposed shipping containers offer a practical solution to cold-chain infrastructure gaps.
A standard 20-foot refrigerated container, typically retired after 10-15 years of ocean service, can be refurbished as a mobile cold storage unit for US$5,000 to US$8,000, a fraction of the cost of permanent brick-and-mortar facilities.
DP World has also opened the DP World Delhi Capitals Arena in Gurugram, offering 1,000 free play hours to the community. Sunil Gupta, CEO of Delhi Capitals, noted: “DP World has brought a clear focus on purpose and community to this partnership. Their commitment to expanding access to cricket and supporting grassroots initiatives has added an important dimension to our collaboration.”
Outlook: Social Responsibility Meets Logistics Innovation
The renewed partnership builds on DP World’s association as Title Partner of the Delhi Capitals Women’s Team since 2024.
For logistics investors, the model demonstrates how corporate social responsibility programs can simultaneously address infrastructure gaps and brand positioning.
Additionally, as food supply chains across Africa seek affordable cold storage solutions at the last mile, the container-conversion approach offers a proven, scalable template.
