LEWISTON, Maine (WMTW) – A man is being treated for life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a freight train and became trapped underneath a railroad car, according to officials.
Lewiston Fire Chief Mark Caron was the first to confirm to WMTW that a man was struck by a CSX freight train on the tracks in the area of Riverside Street.
The Lewiston Police Department later announced that first responders were dispatched to the railroad tracks in the area of Whipple Street at about 10:42 a.m.
First responders found the man stuck beneath a railroad car. The man was freed by first responders and transported to Central Maine Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police are not sharing the man’s name at this time.
The train was traveling south toward Auburn at the time of the incident. Police said investigators from the Railroad Authority are leading the investigation.
Police said railroad cars were blocking traffic on Libby Avenue and Strawberry Avenue, so they asked drivers to seek alternate routes.
