Corinth Canal in Southern Greece to Reopen to Light Shipping in July

The Corinth Canal in southern Greece is expected to reopen to light shipping in July, following more than seven months of shoreline reinforcement work and the removal of tonnes of soil and rocks, the online edition of the Kathimerini newspaper reported on March 20, citing information from officials.

The waterway, which connects the Gulf of Corinth to the Saronic Gulf and significantly shortens the route between the Ionian Sea and the Aegean Sea, was closed for repairs in October 2025.

The 6.34-kilometre-long canal was dug between 1881 and 1893 to save ships the time-consuming detour around the Peloponnese peninsula. Due to its width of just 24.6 metres and maximum depth of eight metres, it is no longer suitable for most modern commercial ships and is used primarily by tourist vessels, Kathimerini noted.
