HII celebrated 128 graduates from the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School, highlighting the vital role of skilled workers in building America.
HAMPTON, Va. — Huntington Ingalls Industries celebrated 128 graduates of Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School Saturday during a commencement ceremony at Liberty Live Church.
U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon delivered the keynote address, highlighting the importance of skilled workers in building and sustaining the nation.
“On the eve of America’s 250th anniversary, I am reminded of how much we have relied on skilled workers to build and sustain our nation,” McMahon said. “Today, you join that proud tradition.”
McMahon also toured the shipyard Friday and participated in a workforce development roundtable with shipbuilders.
Kari Wilkinson, president of Newport News Shipbuilding, praised graduates during the ceremony.
“What an incredible accomplishment this day represents,” Wilkinson said. “Thank you for your commitment and dedication.”
Among the graduates, Alex Edwards received the Homer L. Ferguson Award, given to the apprentice with the highest combined academic and craft average. Edwards, who began working at the shipyard in 2018, now serves as a deck electrician on the USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74), which is undergoing refueling and overhaul at the shipyard.
