Defence tech firm Big Bang Boom Solutions launches new R&D centre in Chennai

Chennai-based Deep-tech company Big Bang Boom Solutions (BBBS), specialising in defense aerospace and space, has launched its new R&D hub SHAKTI to support its execution capabilities in defence sector and expand to frontier technologies.

SHAKTI,which stands for Solutions Hub for Advanced Knowledge, Technology & Innovation, will house the company’s research and engineering teams across verticals AI and autonomous systems, electronic warfare, Material Science and Nanotechnology. 

The 20,000 sqft facility will have the capacity to house 200 engineers and will support the company in meeting the demand in the aerospace and defence sector while also expanding to other areas such as Space, Nuclear and Quantum  Technologies, according to Shivraman Ramaswamy, Co-founder and CTO, BBBS. 

Seven deep tech labs

Addressing mediapersons at the inauguration, Ramaswamy said that the facility will contain seven deep tech labs dedicated for the company’s various verticals. “SHAKTI will be BBBS’s integrated innovation ecosystem, designed to accelerate the development and deployment of cutting edge technologies across defence, aerospace, and emerging domains,” he said.  

BBBS has to date raised $30 million in funding and looking ahead, Ramswamy said that the focus will be on increasing both the company’s technological depth and operational footprint.

Beyond the R&D centre the company also operates a fully-equipped Assembly, Integration  and Testing (AIT) facility along with its corporate head office. It has a total team strength of over 160 with about 80 dedicated engineers driving core technology development. 

The inauguration took place in the presence of Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of Technology Development Board, (Department of Science and Technology), Government of India, who said that DST is actively looking at nuclear energy as a domain with high potential and ensured government support for any startups working in the domain.
