A local fishing boat capsized in the waters off northeastern Japan’s Aomori Prefecture on Tuesday, after it collided with a cargo ship. Authorities say four people are dead.
The remaining nine crew members are all said to be uninjured.
The collision occurred about 20 kilometers off the coast of the city of Misawa. At around 1:18 a.m. the coast guard received a report from the cargo ship’s captain.
Officials say all of the fishing boat’s crew members were thrown into the water. They add it is likely that the fishing boat sank.
The coast guard is investigating the cause of the collision. It says that at the time of the accident the waves were about a meter high, the weather was fine, and there was good visibility.
