DEKALB – Kasen Cargo of the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher Middle School wrestling team won a state championship in the IESA Class 1A state meet on Saturday.
Cargo pinned Sandwich’s Bentley Green in 3:58 in the 80-pound championship match after pinning Aledo Mercer County’s Kade Roeder in 52 seconds in the semifinals. On Friday, Cargo pinned Shelbyville Moulton’s Kolt Ulmer in 40 seconds and won via 19-2 technical fall over Coal City’s Leo Christensen.
Brady Lowe earned a fourth-place medal at 119 pounds.
After winning via 9-0 major decision over Sandwich’s Jaxon Ramey and via 9-3 decision over Genoa Kingston’s Adric Becker on Friday, Lowe lost via 5-2 decision to eventual state champion Jake Webb of Rochester in the semifinals on Saturday. Lowe won via 12-0 major decision over Port Byron Riverdale’s Kyler Kindelsperger in the wrestleback semifinals before losing via 10-5 decision to Westmont’s Jude Egshig in the third-place match.
As a team, GCMS/Fisher finished 17th out of 80 teams with a score of 54. Westmont won the state title with a score of 124 ½.
At 90 pounds, Tanner Brucker went 2-2 as he pinned Vandalia’s Conrad Braun in 2:17 and Devin Ng of Mount Prospect River Trails in 2:14. Brucker lost via 12-0 major decision to Taylor Ridge Rockridge’s Bennett Ledbetter and via 8-6 decision to Williamsville’s Sebastian Casson.
At 95 pounds, Chasen Enghausen won via 16-0 technical fall over Clifton Nash’s Gunner Temple after losing via 2:22 pinfall to Fulton River Bend’s Briar Spooner and before losing via 15-0 technical fall to Monticello’s Gavin Somers.
At 85 pounds, Gavin Lange won via 10-2 major decision over Colona’s Jackson Schneckloth after losing via 6-3 decision to Auburn’s Wyatt Cumming and before losing via 4-1 decision to Ingleside Gavin South’s Ean Campos.
At 275 pounds, Cooper Hull lost via 16-second pinfall to Westmont’s Kaleb Green before losing via 2:51 pinfall to Mercer County’s Zach Icenogle.
