Two men have been charged after a drug bust at Euston on the Victoria-New South Wales border.

Victoria Police said about 120 kilograms of pseudoephedrine was found concealed underneath the floorboards of a shipping container.

Australian Border Force officials detected the substances in Melbourne on January 23 and notified Victoria Police.

The pseudoephedrine was seized and replaced with an inert substance.

Pseudoephedrine is an illegal substance and a main ingredient in the manufacture of methylamphetamine.

On Saturday, police were notified that the consignment had been recently collected.

Mildura’s Divisional Response Unit then attended an address in Euston in New South Wales.

Two men at the address fled on foot, but were taken into custody.

A 38-year-old man and a 50-year-old man from Robinvale were both charged with attempting to import a border-controlled drug and attempting to traffic a large commercial quantity drug of dependence.

They were remanded to face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in June.

Mildura Police Detective Senior Sergeant Liam Tinkler said the pseudoephedrine would have been made into illicit drugs to sell on the streets.

“We have stopped ill-gotten gains from reaching the pockets of those involved in this insidious venture,” he said.

“Organised criminals distribute these harmful substances anywhere they see fit to make a profit, knowing full well the harm these drugs cause to our community.

“We’ve made no secret of the fact that Victoria Police is determined to make this state a hostile place for organised crime, and in particular those who are engaged in the manufacture and importation of drugs.

“We will continue to work with our partner agencies to ensure those involved in this kind of criminal activity will be caught and held to account.”

On Monday a further three search warrants were executed at homes in Robinvale in Victoria and Euston, where a pump-action shotgun was also seized.
