Researchers at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) have reportedly developed an innovative and eco-friendly technology to reduce the electrical conductivity (EC) of coir pith.
It addresses a long-standing challenge faced by the coir industry, where high salinity levels in coir pith often lead to rejection in foreign countries. The research was carried out by Uma Lakshmi K.S. from the Department of Environmental Studies and Dr. Abesh Reghuvaran, Assistant Professor at the Centre for Science in Society, according to a release.
Their findings have been published in Bioresource Technology Reports, an international journal. The team demonstrated that the salinity in coir pith could be effectively reduced by using ultraviolet (UV) radiation, resulting in a decrease in electrical conductivity by up to 27.4%. This advancement enables high EC coir pith to be converted into low EC coir pith, thereby enhancing its commercial value and eliminating the need for multiple grading standards.
The research team is collaborating with the Mechanical Engineering department in the varsity to design and develop a cost-effective device for large-scale application and commercialisation, it said.
