GRA interdicts five customs officers over Niger transit cargo scandal

Management of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has suspended five officers from its Customs Division as part of an ongoing investigation into the handling of a transit cargo consignment destined for Niger.

The interdiction, which takes effect immediately, follows a targeted enforcement operation on February 18, 2026, that uncovered significant discrepancies in the documentation and processing of the goods.

According to a statement released by the GRA on Tuesday, the operation revealed potential breaches of established transit protocols, prompting an immediate and detailed internal review. The five officers have been asked to step aside pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation.

“Initial assessments indicate potential procedural breaches requiring further independent and comprehensive examination,” the GRA statement read. “The investigation will determine the full facts, including the extent of any individual involvement and departures from established Customs protocols.”

The GRA indicated that the probe is not limited to the five officers already interdicted, noting that additional personnel may be called in to assist with the investigation. Upon conclusion, the Authority has pledged to take “appropriate administrative action in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.”

While the specifics of the discrepancies have not been publicly detailed, transit cargo procedures are strictly monitored to prevent the diversion of goods meant for neighbouring landlocked countries onto the local market, which can undercut domestic industries and lead to significant revenue losses.

The GRA moved to reassure the public and trade stakeholders that the swift action underscores its commitment to protecting national revenue and maintaining the integrity of the country’s borders.

“GRA wishes to assure all stakeholders and the general public that this action reflects a commitment to protect national revenue, growth of local industries and promote overall economic development,” the statement added.

The Authority reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring that all revenue collection and enforcement procedures are executed with the “highest standards of professionalism and accountability.”
