Air cargo in Puerto Rico reaches 621 million pounds, with health products predominating.

Air cargo volume at Puerto Rico’s three international airports reached 621 million pounds in 2024, with nearly half consisting of pharmaceuticals and medical devices, according to a report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) released Tuesday by Governor Jenniffer González Colón.

The study, titled “Puerto Rico: Information on Air Cargo Infrastructure and Operations,” was prepared in compliance with a provision included in the 2024 Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act, championed by González Colón during her tenure as Resident Commissioner in Congress.

According to the report, the most significant growth in cargo traffic was recorded at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, solidifying the island’s strategic role in the supply chain of high-value industries, particularly pharmaceuticals.

The governor maintained that air cargo is an essential component for strengthening advanced manufacturing in Puerto Rico and positioning the island as a key center under U.S. jurisdiction, at a time when industrial relocation initiatives (“reshoring”) are being promoted.

The GAO analysis also identifies areas of opportunity to sustain projected growth, including warehouse improvements, expansion of cold storage facilities, and increased staffing for federal cargo inspections.

The González Colón administration affirmed that it will work with the private sector, airport authorities, and federal agencies to implement the report’s recommendations and continue strengthening the island’s air cargo infrastructure.
