Armed forces airlift two crew members from merchant shipping vessel

The two crew members were taken to Mater Dei for further treatment

Two merchant shipping crew members requiring urgent medical attention were airlifted from a vessel by Malta’s armed forces (AFM) on Friday before being taken to Mater Dei for further treatment.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the AFM said adverse weather conditions had made the operation “particularly challenging”.

Malta has been buffeted by strong winds in recent days, with the Met Office issuing a red weather warning yesterday, downgraded to orange on Friday morning. Windspeeds reached almost 100km/h on Thursday evening.

The AFM urged the public to observe weather warnings and avoid venturing out to sea in such circumstances.
