Cooling Without Water Chillers

Nvidia sent a chill through HVAC stocks — and it’s all about cooling innovation. At the recent Consumer Electronics Show, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang unveiled the company’s new Vera Rubin AI platform, claiming it can be cooled using hot water — and without traditional water chillers. Nvidia says the system uses direct liquid cooling and can reject heat using ambient air, dramatically cutting energy use.

The market reacted fast. Trane Technologies fell more than 8%, Johnson Controls dropped over 8%, and Modine Manufacturing slid more than 17% following the announcement.

That reaction comes as data centers — one of HVAC’s fastest-growing markets — are booming. The U.S. is projected to more than triple data center energy demand by 2030, and these facilities have traditionally been some of the most HVAC-intensive buildings anywhere. But Nvidia’s approach suggests future AI facilities may need fewer conventional chillers and cooling systems — shifting demand toward liquid cooling infrastructure instead.

Rubin-based systems are expected to hit the market in the second half of 2026, meaning contractors and manufacturers alike will be watching closely to see whether this marks a true turning point — or just another evolution in data center cooling.
